Security Update, November, 2006

This will be my last report to you in that I am retiring from the Chair of the Security Committee. I am not retiring because it is an onerous job or unpleasant in any way. I am retiring because I simply think the neighborhood will benefit from fresh perspective, priorities, and ideas. I am reading the recent book on the Mayflower, and certainly we do not have anything like the problems of the Pilgrims during the Indian wars of the 1670s. However, that is not to minimize the basic problems we do have, which is the almost constant level of low level crime (robbery of opportunities) which is a violation of basic rights, and is a potential threat to life and limb.

I think we have established good working relations with the Police, and mutual respect. The Police are in the same boat as we. We both are not in charge of the amount of resources that are allocated for crime prevention. Our elected representatives are in charge of this resource. I learned a long time ago that nothing happens unless you take your complaint to the person who can fix the problem. Lt. Thornton told us 45-50 new officers are coming on line, and this may well make a difference

One final suggestion on security is that our group of six neighbors who watch out for each other when one or more is out of town seems to be working well. I suggest you might want to try it.
Thank you. Rob Clark
