HOLIDAY ALERT IN FOREST HILLS
Forest Hills residents should be on full scale alert for any suspicious persons, activity or sounds especially as we enter the holiday season and throughout the next six to seven weeks.
There have been four reported incidents of property crime in the neighborhood in the last 10 days. They include a day-time burglary, a night-time effort to break down an outside door while residents were at home, theft of a motorized toy and theft of items in an unsecured vehicle.
What can we do? "Be a nosy neighbor," is the advice from Columbia's South Region Police leadership. Be on the lookout for our neighbors especially while many are traveling. Immediately report to police any suspicious or unusual activity of any kind you see or hear by calling 911 or 252-2911. When asking for someone to investigate tell them you want to speak with the officer.
- If you hear an alarm go off for more than 60 seconds - call 911 and report it.
- If you see someone suspicious or observe someone watching a vacationing house, call 911 and report it.
- If someone you don't know knocks at your darkened door and asks for someone you don't know, call 911 and report it.
- If your neighbors forgot to take in their newspapers or mail, pick it up for them.
Property crime is on the rise all over the city. Police are increasing patrols, including Forest Hills, and have asked City Council for permission to use overtime to put more "boots on the street" during the holiday season.
It is a good idea to let neighbors know on both sides and across the street when you will be away from home overnight. Let's resolve to all be "nosy neighbors" and have a real "crime watch" this holiday season in Forest Hills.
Alert Teenager Halts Attempted Forest Hills Burglary
An alert teenager has stopped an attempted burglary in Forest Hills leading to an immediate arrest of one suspect. According to police, a Forest Hills teenager saw a young man pick up a brick last Thursday afternoon and head for the rear of a home.
Her family called 911 and within minutes police were on the way. As police approached the neighborhood, one young man was seen running. He was chased and apprehended. Police are searching for a second suspect.
Our local police patrol officer Dan Bowman also reports that there was another arrest of a suspected burglar near Forest Hills last week. Break-ins have been reported on Manning Avenue and in Melrose Heights.
The Forest Hills Neighborhood Association was formed 22 years ago to become a Crime Watch Neighborhood to help neighbors to know one another so that we all could be watchful for each other. Crime Watch works when we are all alert.

Until Recent Burglary Attempt Forest Hills Had Hardly Any Crime Reports in 2009
Police reported to FHNA officers in early May that it had been more days since there was an incident report in the neighborhood. And for the first third of 2009 crime reports in Forest Hills were much less than incidents reported in Melrose, Shandon and Heathwood.
Of course, Heathwood and Shandon experienced a rash of property crime which police believe was halted the arrest this spring of three Dreher students.
